Are People Really Telling You the Truth
Great Leaders Create Space for Honest Conversations
You may think people are telling you the truth but are you creating an environment where they feel safe enough to tell you what you need to hear?
Authentic conversation rarely happens when people are operating from fear, mistrust, or the feeling that they simply need to follow orders.
When people don’t feel safe to speak honestly, they protect themselves. They say what they think others want to hear. They stop challenging ideas. They stop asking questions.
And when that happens, everyone loses.
I’ve learned through my work with athletes, high performers, and leaders that meaningful breakthroughs often begin with a conversation but only when people are truly present and willing to listen.
When I earned my professional coaching certification through the International Coaching Federation (ICF), my understanding of leadership coaching was enhanced significantly. Being trained as a professional coach reinforced the importance of being fully present, listening deeply, asking powerful questions, and creating an environment built on trust, respect, and openness. When people experience that environment, they become more willing to share their ideas, challenge assumptions, explore what they may be missing, and have the conversations that lead to real growth.
That training has shaped the way I coach both leaders and athletes. It has reinforced something I’ve learned throughout my career: coaching isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating the space for people to discover better answers for themselves.
The best leaders don’t just create conversations. They create the conditions for authentic conversations to happen.
Coach Druzz’s Reflection
Ask yourself:
What have I done to make others feel that I am open to hearing what they have to say?
Do the people around me feel safe enough to challenge my thinking?
What might I discover if I listened with more attention and less judgment?
Attention creates connection. Connection creates trust. Trust creates better conversations. And better conversations create better performance.
Embrace the conversation even when it’s uncomfortable. Lean into it. Ask insightful questions. Listen with greater intention. Create the space for honesty, trust, and growth.
Often times the conversations that people are most reluctant to have are the ones that can move you - and the people you lead - forward.
Start the conversation!
Be present. Listen deeply. And create the space for an honest conversation.
The Standard is the Difference
Raise the Standard.
