Are You Overthinking the Decision—or Avoiding It?

When More Information Becomes an Excuse for Not Taking Action.

Some decisions don't require more information. They require the courage to make a choice.

Have you ever confused overthinking with preparation?

You keep gathering information, asking for opinions, analyzing possibilities, and waiting for certainty that may never come.

I have!

There's a difference between being thorough and being stuck.

Indecision has consequences. Opportunities pass. Momentum disappears. And sometimes the decision becomes harder because we've spent too much time avoiding it.

Here's what I've learned: Effective decision-making isn't about eliminating uncertainty. It's about establishing standards that guide your choices.

My college basketball coach, Lucille Kyvallos, taught me the importance of preparation, attention to detail, and disciplined decision-making. Her ability to be thorough was impeccable. She understood that preparation builds confidence when it's time to make a decision.

Years later, I became interested in former Alabama football coach Nick Saban's philosophy, The Process. His approach reinforced an important lesson: establish standards for preparation and execution rather than judging every decision by its outcome.

Both influenced how I approach decisions today.

I start with my values. What matters most? My standards then become the expectations against which I evaluate my options.

I gather the information I need, identify what I can control, and make the best decision possible with what I know.

Then I commit.

Your values provide direction. Your standards guide your decisions. Your attention keeps you focused on what matters.

The goal isn't to make perfect decisions. It's to develop a process you trust, especially when uncertainty and pressure enter the picture.

Coach Druzz's Reflection

  • What decision am I continuing to analyze instead of making?

  • What information do I actually need to move forward?

  • Am I seeking clarity, or am I avoiding the discomfort of making a choice?

This Week's Practice: Be Thorough. Be Decisive.

1. Identify the decision. Choose one decision you've been postponing. Write it down and establish a reasonable deadline.

2. Apply your standards. Identify your values, gather essential information, and evaluate what you can control. Stop collecting information when it no longer changes your decision.

3. Decide and commit. Make your choice. Direct your attention toward execution rather than continually second-guessing yourself. Evaluate and adjust when necessary.

Sometimes the next level isn't another answer. It's a decision.

What decision have you been putting off? What standard will help you move forward?
