Why Comparison Costs You!

One of the fastest ways for an athlete to lose confidence is to begin measuring their progress against someone else’s highlight reel.

As I observe the athletes I work with, one of the most common things that derails them is not a lack of talent, effort, or potential, but a subtle distraction: comparing themselves to other athletes. The danger of comparison is that it rarely tells the truth. It invites you to judge your chapter three against someone else’s chapter twelve, and then convinces you that you are behind.

Social media often intensifies this struggle. Athletes are constantly exposed to curated images of success, progress, and perfection. Over time, this can lower self-esteem, increase anxiety and self-doubt, fragment attention, and create a deeper fear of making mistakes. When an athlete repeatedly sees the polished version of another person’s journey, it becomes easy to question their own timeline, their own growth, and even their own worth.

That kind of comparison quietly steals momentum. It slows progress the moment you start looking sideways. It creates pressure to appear flawless, both online and in competition, and that pressure can make mistakes feel larger than they are. Before long, fear of judgment begins to shape behavior, and athletes start playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

Comparison does not motivate you. It delays you.

When you look at someone else’s success, you are seeing the highlight reel of an outcome, not the years of failure, self-doubt, and invisible work that came before it. You are seeing the result, not the resistance. You are seeing the finish, not the forming.

The better question is not, “How do I compare?” it is, “Am I becoming who I was meant to be?”

Run your own timeline. The only comparison that truly serves you is the one between who you are today and who you were in the past.

Here are three simple ways to refocus on you:

  • Limit scrolling before training, competition, and sleep.

  • Mute accounts that consistently trigger insecurity.

  • Replace comparison with performance goals you can actually control.
