What Are You Really Working Toward?
Goals Tell You Where You're Going. Standards Tell You How You'll Get There.
Most high performers are working toward something - the promotion, the next opportunity, the bigger goal, the championship.
But here's the question:
Are you focused only on what you want to accomplish - or are you paying attention to who you want to become along the way?
Achieving the goal is only part of the story. How you prepare, how you respond to challenges, how you treat people, and the standards you maintain along the way matter just as much.
When success is defined only by the outcome, you lose sight of what you can control, the way you prepare, the choices you make, and how you show up every day.
Goals give you a destination. Standards give you a way to operate.
Goals tell you what you want to accomplish. Standards define how you will prepare, behave, respond, and perform along the way.
High performers need both. The goal provides direction. The standard governs the journey.
Your attention should be directed toward the behaviors and actions that move you toward your goal without compromising the standard you want to live by.
Coach Druzz's Reflection
Ask yourself:
What am I really working toward?
Am I measuring success only by the outcome or by how I'm showing up along the way?
What standard do I need to hold myself to in order to become the person capable of achieving my goal?
This Week's Practice: Define the Standard
1. Name the goal. What are you really working toward?
2. Define the standard. How do you need to think, prepare, behave, and perform along the way to achieving that goal?
3. Choose one behavior. What is one thing you can consistently do this week that reflects that standard?
Your attention should support your standard—not compete with it.
Your goal gives you direction. Your standard determines how you show up along the way.
And your attention determines whether your daily actions align with both.
The Standard Is the Difference.
Raise Your Standard.
